Are ceramic dutch ovens safe to use on the stove top?
I bought a ceramic dutch oven the other day (not a very expensive one) and was wondering if it was safe to use on my stove top. Should I keep it to a low temperature?
I looked at the bottom and its a brand called "Swiss Pro." It says oven safe but nothing about stove top. My stove is the old fashioned electric type. I assume its enamel coated like everyone is saying but really don't know. It looks a lot like the LeCreuset ovens but I am sure it is made of clay and not metal.
Enamel coated coated cookware can be used on any cook-top. If you really mean a ceramic (clay) type dutch oven, the kind you are supposed to soak in water first, then no, those can only be used in the oven.
EDIT: Sorry didn't see your "additional details". I believe your dutch is porcelain over steel which means it should be fine to use on the stove top. If you want to be sure it is not some type of pottery, just tap it gently with a spoon and if it sounds like metal it is and safe to use. It doesn't look like Swiss Pro make pottery pots anyway.
