Many winter holidays, such as Yule, utilize the symbol of the tree as part of the celebration. This goes back to the Celts, who did not understand and were frightened by the seasonal changes of the moon and sun waxing and waning. The Druids did, however, understand what was going on, and thus the Druids would go to the top of a mountain on the Winter Solstice and burn a tree as part of their ceremony, and in the days following this the Celts noticed that the days were starting to get longer, which made them happy. Christians took the idea of the tree on fire and translated it into today's Christmas tree with lights. As it was in the original celebration, so too can you make the Christmas tree be the focal point of your holiday decorating and celebration.
